Hippocrates may have started the idea of recording and the oath in medicine but lest we not forget that his foundation was still Galen's four humours (Black bile; Yellow bile; blood and phlegm) and his addition of treatment by opposites. Galen came from Greece but was from the Roman period. Much of their work still dictated by theology and religion leading to ignorance towards the anatomy. The best theological, or indeed mythological, help in medicine i feel was Asclepious and the idea of an Asclepion which also, incidently, is the foundation of the olympion and the modern day olympics. The idea of an Asclepion (a worshiping tower) was where sick people went to exercise, rest and eat healthy - something doctors still prescribe today. Ever wondered why on all ambulances you see a star with a snake wrapped around a stick? It is because of that God. I know this is nothing to do with determinism or fatalism and is far from ethics or philosophy, but it is however historical and an important part in medicine through time.
Interesting read though.
